Learn from professional handlers and pet/feed animals such as a sloth, hedgehog, giant sulcatta tortoise, pot belly pig, macaw, and more.
Show times: 11:30a.m. and 1:30p.m. (Show is 1 hour. Stay for the full hour or just stop in!)
- Recycled Crafts
Help children get in touch with their creative side through recycled craft projects! They can make their own toilet paper or pinecone bird feeder, setup a turtle plant pal friend and make their very own hungry caterpillar.
- Visiting Owls & Other Animals
Interact with the animals that Raptors Society & Beekeepers bring! Help Save Pets will also bring dogs for pet adoption. Note: Dogs cannot be taken home on the same day as the festival, but adoption process can be started.)
- Face Painting!
Look like your favorite superhero, animal or get creative with other ideas. Frozen, Batman, tigers, puppies, flowers… our talented artists love painting and working with kids! Can’t decide what you’d like? … An iPad will be available with inspiration ideas!
- Create & Learn with Joliet Public Library
Meet the Joliet Public Library’s red wriggler compost worms, and learn about their habitat. Create and repurpose with recycled materials. Make pop-up castles.
- Fun Things to See!
Blacksmith – Watch a blacksmith using a forge, anvil and cooling tub. Children (and adults) can make their own necklace.
City of Joliet Storm Water Display – Children will learn through a display containing live fish that contaminants and debris should never be dumped into a storm sewer drain as these contaminants directly affect the water quality of our streams and rivers. **Fish from the display are given away at the end of the day!
- “Real Men Read” – NHBW – Children’s Story Time
It’s story time! Children can sit down and listen to a story read aloud while they wait for the animal show to begin.

- New 2017 – Bluestem University Courses
Bluestem University is an interactive seminar experience that includes original, intriguing, no-cost courses designed for YOU, our Bluestem guests. This year, a few of our courses are designed to keep children in mind through fun, engaging activities they can participate in with their parents. Try yoga poses in The School of Wellness, “15 Minutes Yoga: Fitness for Your Busy Day” (11:15a.m.-12:00p.m.). Build a compost bin (to take home) and learn how it works in The School of Waste, “Composting For Home”(2:15p.m.-3:00p.m.).
